When talking to your kids about careers and college - do you ever mention freelance copywriting?
I have a confession to make...
Besides creating this awesome website about my passion for raising generous millionaire kids...
I also am a freelance copywriter and columnist for a local newspaper in Stillwater, Minnesota called the Stillwater Gazette.
And I want to yell at the top of my lungs...
Tell Your Kids About Freelance Copywriting!!
If your kids (or you) have a knack for sales and persuading (my 14 year old son Tony could sell candy to his dentist!)...
and can write half way decent (don't worry about spelling - that's what spell checkers are for)...
Then they could have a very profitable (not to mention FUN) career in freelance copywriting.
And be able to work from anywhere in the world.
Not at all.
Anything worth while takes WORK. But it's WORTH IT.
One day, in the middle of folding laundry and dreading making dinner...I don't mind cooking - it's grocery shopping I hate!..
I was flipping through the mail and a letter caught my eye.
It said something like: "If you can write a simple letter like this, then you can make a six-figure income as a copywriter.
So I opened the envelope and read the letter...and liked what I heard.
It was a letter about a course called: The Accelerated Program For Six-Figure Copywriting.
Now I have to admit, I really didn't know what copywriting was exactly...but I LOVED the idea of getting paid to write.
And it was something I could do from home, in my spare time, around the kids sports, homework, etc.
maybe I could make some money at something I would do for FREE any way!
So I bought the course for $249, not cheap, but it wasn't going to bankrupt me, and dug right in.
And was HOOKED.
You see, I went to college for business - worked as a credit analyst in a bank, was an accountant/tax preparer for many years...was pretty good...
But HATED every minute of it.
Now my previous boss is my CPA!
So when I started having kids, I jumped at the chance to be a stay-at-home mom.
But I always knew I would start my own business from home when the time was right.
A good friend of mine gave me some really good advice that I've never forgotten...
"Sonja, You can have everything you've ever dreamed of...you just might not be able to have it all at the same time."
So I was patient.
My first priority has always been - and still is - being home for my kids.
And who wants to deal with office politics, any way?
I hear enough of it from my husband...NO thanks.
And it's growing by the day - by the hour - by the minute.
Mainly because of the internet.
How many advertisements or sales letters do you think you see every day?
The average is 650 sales messages every day!
But it's probably actually closer to thousands.
And every one of those has to be written...by copywriters.
And I haven't even mentioned direct mail yet.
I don't know about you, but I get direct mail from...
the Arbor Society...
United Hospital foundation...
Money-making scams (I mean opportunities)...
stock trading services...
and MUCH MORE.
And all this is written by freelance copywriters. Who get paid handsomely - especially if it SELLS.
Remember I mentioned the penniless, highschool dropout?
I interviewed Clayton Makepeace a couple weeks ago for my column in the Stillwater Gazette... You can read it in my next Millionaire-Kids Ezine - so be sure to sign-up here As a freelance copywriter, Clayton makes more money in royalties every month than my husband makes the entire year.
But it's true.
Here's how it works:
Clayton writes a kick-butt sales mag-a-log on some alternative health products, orders come in like crazy.
He makes 10% on gross sales.
But it doesn't stop there.
The company sends out 100,000 more mag-a-logs to another list of customers...and it sells like crazy.
This keeps going for years until people stop buying.
Or Clayton "freshens" it up...for even more, bigger sales.
Clayton is one of a handful of freelance copywriters who make more than a million dollars a year! Check out Clayton's free newsletter and all the ins and outs of the freelance copywriting biz
So after I finished the six-figure copywriting course...
I was chomping at the bit to get paid for my first real job as a freelance copywriter! Check out Craig's List for A LOT of freelance writing jobs... And gave a ring to a business out East looking for a copywriter.
The man was pleasant enough, but told me I didn't have enough experience.
I told him that what I lacked in copywriting experience (my sales tongue kicked in!) I made up for in conviction.
You can't sell ANYTHING if you don't believe in the product, right?
He sold all-natural alternative products for kids with asthma...
I had been able to get Rachel (my oldest daughter) off her daily medication for asthma in less than a year by changing her diet to all natural foods and vitamins!
This was right up my alley...
So he agreed to take a look at my copywriting samples, but still didn't think I had what it took.
He suggested I first try to write a sales letter for a collegue of his for pet food.
And here's where I BLEW IT...
I said something like, "Well, I guess I can start in the dog house first."
It was a JOKE. But he didn't take it that way and chewed me out.
I didn't get in another word.
Needless to say, I didn't get a referral for that freelance copywriting job.
So now I THINK before I SPEAK!
Now, after that unpleasant experience, many people might quit.
But I was even more determined to make it as a freelance copywriter.
So I sent out freelance copywriting letters, samples of my writing, emails, resumes...
really pounded the pavement.
I offered and worked for free as a copywriter to get experience, wrote press releases, fundraising letters, postcards, and articles for my column and website...
Until FINALLY, I got my first freelance copywriting break...
Clayton - million dollar freelance copywriter - agreed to be interviewed for my column!
Oh Happy Day!
Now I'm working as a freelance copywriter on a project for HIS website...
And off to what I hope to be a VERY PROFITABLE copywriting relationship!
Wish me luck - and I'll be sure to keep you posted on all the freelance copywriting opportunities around for you and YOUR KIDS to cash in on!
If you do what you LOVE - the money WILL follow...
